“Mass incarceration is affecting families across the globe. .”
According to the prison policy initiative by Leah Wang, August 11, 2022. Nearly half (47%) of approximately 1.25 million people in state prison are parents of minor children, and about 1 in 5 (19%) of those children is age 4 or younger. altogether, parents in state prison reported roughly 1.25 million minor children, meaning the number of people in state prison almost mirrors the number of impacted minor children. Research indicates that children of incarcerated parents face formidable, cognitive and health-related challenges throughout their development.
This does not calculate federal prisons, transitional or halfway houses. so the impact is so much more than what has been researched. And like the state prison population overall, incarcerated parents themselves grew up in struggling households:
The Prison Brat Foundation understands that the family bond which signifies communication is crucial to the mental health of all parties of the family involved especially the children.
A person whose parent or parent like-figure has been incarcerated for more than 1 day or a child that has been incarcerated for more than 1 day.
A parent that has been incarcerated for more than 1 day or have a child that has been incarcerated for more than 1day. Parents can include: those by birth, adoption, legal guardians or grandparents.
- Writing Workshops, creative writing of all types from Poetry short stories and more.
- Professional development (resume writing, interviewing, college assistance, entrepreneurship, trade school, urban agriculture, etc) - Personal development
- Peer to peer counseling/mentorship - Behavioral Health Therapy
- Transportation & communication assistance between the child and parent - Social support assistance (aid in providing resources for housing; food, utility and furniture assistance, and other basic resources.) - Services for person’s with disabilities through Aretha’s Awareness Program - Resources through Partnerships in the community.
The Prison Brat Foundation is a 501(3)c non-profit organization to all families affected by incarceration.
